The 'Tide Pod Challenge' consists of mainly teens taking pictures or videos of themselves eating the highly concentrated laundry packs and posting them online.

The challenge it can cause serious health problems. A medical toxicologist with Upstate New York Poison Center says pods can cause drowsiness, respiratory issues like choking, gagging and pulmonary edema, as well as seizures, coma or death.

The center has had 18 cases; a majority of them were accidental. However, there were three cases alone over the weekend that were potentially connected to the challenge.

Upstate New York Poison Center Medical Toxicologist Dr. Brett Cherrington believes keeping these products out of reach will prevent those from taking part in the challenge.

"Keep your medications; keep all your chemicals and potentially harmful products stored in a high place, that is not readily accessible to especially young children. Medications and things, lock them up," said Cherrington.

On Tide's website, parents are urged to keep the pods of out reach of children with the container securely closed. They emphasize the pods are intended for cleaning clothes.
