CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Cortland school district is considering shutting down one of its five elementary schools.

Parker Elementary school may be on the chopping block. The district's facilities study committee came together Wednesday night to discuss its options, going over several different scenarios, including closing the school. The study suggests Parker be the one to close, since it's the oldest building with one of the fewer amounts of students.

Members say it's an option due to fiscal stress and declining enrollment. Parents, though, say closing isn't the solution.

"This is an issue that is far bigger than this school closing or that school closing, or these schools fighting to be off the chopping block,” said Stacy Petri. "It's a community-wide issue. I think the school board needs to ask not what to do, but why are these families leaving?"

The district will review a final report at its next meeting January 3.
