SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An event like Las Vegas can also put a tremendous strain on hospitals, but they're prepared to act if needed.
Hospitals like Upstate Medical University practice responding to traumatic events several times each year.
Officials at Upstate say they work to really stretch their system and take these simulations to a maximum level, to better learn how to respond.
Practicing these events involves as many clinical providers as they can get -- as well as local police, fire, and EMS crews. That's because an event like a mass shooting requires a lot of coordination between all of the agencies involved.
Upstate is also a level one trauma center, so officials say they would have to stay open to treat people coming in with other emergencies and patients already at the hospital.
