WHITESBORO, N.Y. -- Every Monday during the village's farmers market, people get a chance to take a look at something else that has grown in Whitesboro.

"All over the village, I would ask people if I could interview them, and that was how this all began. Everything that's here has been collected," said Village Historian Judy Mallozzi.

At first, the Whitesboro Historical Museum was located at village hall, but now it's at the town hall building, a place built in 1807 that's more spacious, and handicap accessible.

"We have some really cool dioramas of the area back in the 1800s," said Whitesboro Historical Museum Co-Curator Dana Nimey-Olney. "We have one of the village green, which includes this building. We have one of the Erie Canal that shows how it went through the village, and the businesses that were here."

Their mission isn't just to preserve what's inside the building, but also the building itself.

"It was the first court house in Oneida County. Then it reverted back to the White family, because it wasn't for public use," said Nimey-Olney. "And then, it was given back to the town and the village in 1860 by the White family, and it's been in our possession ever since. And it's been a court for the town and or village ever since."

Mallozzi said she wanted to save a large mural in the building.

"This mural is one of my favorite things, and of course we wanted to preserve it," she said. "It's been here since 1984, when it was the bicentennial of the town, and it depicts different historical places."

Their effort to share the area's history is appreciated by residents.

Whitesboro resident Douglas Benson said, "I was very excited when I heard that the village was gonna do that. Just as soon as it's wintertime, we're gonna dig a few things out and give them what they don't have."

The museum is located in the town hall building on Park Avenue. In addition to the farmers market, appointments can also be made to view it.
