SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In light of the Martin Street fire and other recent serious incidents in the community, educators and firefighters are teaming up to teach kids and parents about fire safety.

Grant Middle School hosted a fire safety demonstration on Thursday evening.

Officials stressed the importance of having working fire detectors and also want every family to come up with a plan in case of emergency.

"We want everyone to have a meeting place, to make sure that everyone is out of the home and safe. We want everyone to be able to get out of the home, crawling on the floor, learning all of those safety procedures," said Anita Whitaker, Grant Middle School program facilitator.

The American Red Cross was at the event to hand out free smoke detectors.
