SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The annual Salt City Cluster Dog Show is beginning a day early this year at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Five kennel clubs will host a series of events in both the Exhibit Center and the Science and Industry Buildings.

Hundreds of dog lovers from around the region head to Syracuse for the show every year. About 150 breeds will be featured this time around. Dogs compete for Best of Breed and Best in Show in events that test obedience and agility in obstacle courses.

Show organizers say it's a great time for kids, but to also scout out potential breeds for pets.

"It's a great opportunity. A dog is a wonderful family pet and they have to be a pet much longer than they have to be a show dog. So it's a great opportunity to come out and see the dogs. Maybe pick a new breed for you and your family. And look at the opportunities there are," said Pat Welch, the Fingerlakes Kennel Club Show chair.

Doors open Wednesday through Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for kids; however, admission Wednesday and Thursday is free.
