UTICA, N.Y. -- It took Utica firefighters several hours to put out a house fire Tuesday.
Crews were called to a home on Park Road in East Utica around 1:30 in the afternoon. Chief Russell Brooks says he believes the house was just recently purchased. He says the new owners were doing some repairs and using the fireplace at the time.
Investigators say flames ignited in the attic space, causing the roof to immediately collapse.
"We also ran into a problem with hydrants freezing up," Brooks said. "[It's] low water pressure in this area of the city and this frigid weather takes its toll on both men and machinery."
Brooks says a few firefighters received minor injuries, including cases of frostbite, and one firefighter received minor burns to his face.
