WILNA, N.Y. -- The town of Wilna has amended its dog control law after ending services performed by Jefferson County. Under the old contract, the county provided dog control, as well as pound and shelter services in the town. This year, Wilna decided to hire its own dog control officer.
The new law is now consistent with dog control laws in the three villages located in the town -- Carthage, Deferiet, and Herrings. Wilna's attorney says financial reasons also led to the change.
"The hope is for similar or maybe even a little less money, we'll have a little bit more control over the enforcement process and hopefully be able to provide better services to our citizens," said Wilna Town Attorney Mark Gebo.
The town's dog control officer will respond to complaints, pick up stray, loose and dangerous dogs, and issue summons for violations and court appearances, among other duties.
