VIRGIL, N.Y. -- On Friday, April 24, 2015 at approximately 8:45 p.m. authorities said Daniel Haynes III lost control of his 2007 Chevy Impala and hit a utility pole. His daughter, 6-year-old Alexia Haynes died as a result of her injuries.

In court documents, friends of Haynes, who were also in his car, describe what happened before the crash.

In a written statement, 23-year-old Joshua Gleason wrote he went to Haynes' home and Haynes had his three daughters there. When he arrived he said, "Danny was already drinking." And then another friend got to the house and they drank.

That friend was 21-year-old Devon Luoma. Luoma in a written statement said they all were drinking beer and were playing pool.

Both men wrote that they drank several beers, but were unsure of how much Haynes had. They wrote that they planned to go out and Haynes was going to drop his daughters off at a babysitter's house. Gleason and Luoma stated Haynes was traveling 100 miles per hour or more on West State Road and that they told him to slow down but he didn't.

They said he sped through a stop sign, lost control and that's when the Chevy Impala crashed into a utility pole.

Gleason said the girls were not wearing seat belts. He also said Haynes was trying to drive away, and he and Luoma told Haynes to stop because the kids were hurt.

"Danny looked into the back seat and saw the girls and stopped the car. He got out of the car, went to the back seat and held his daughter," Gleason said.

Luoma said people were outside and called police.

According to an oral admissions form, the Cortland County sheriff's office said Haynes made a number of statements, including "I just did one of the worst things you could ever do in your [expletive] life."

Haynes is facing more than a dozen charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Haynes will be back in court May 11. He's being held without bail in Cortland County Jail.
