An 18-day fair? This summer the New York State Fair will start five days sooner and run from Friday, August 21st, through Labor Day.
The fair would include an extra weekend and new programming, including a motor show in the Expo Center and sensory friendly days. Five more days means ten more Chevy Court concerts and five additional concerts on the New York Experience stage.
"There is a great creative element that comes out of how do you create five more days? I mean you’re essentially adding 40% more fair here,” said Troy Waffner, the New York State Fair Director. “That’s going to be the fun of it and what drives us all here. As tired as we all get sometimes, it’s just how do we draw more people in? You know, keep doing crazy stuff.”
For the last four summers, the fair has set attendance records. The goal of adding a third weekend is to continue to bring in more fairgoers.
"Having another weekend there might bring in another couple days of big crowds,” said Brian Weston, a Baldwinsville resident. “So for people that can't who work during the day during the week, it might be easier for them, too."
On average, each fairgoer spends about $75, officials say, which drives millions of dollars into the Central New York economy. Adding days means additional income.
"It's going to bring business in to the Syracuse area, so anything that will drive business in is better for us," said Roberta Chandler, Syracuse resident.
In his executive budget proposal on Tuesday, Cuomo proposed an additional $4.9 million to fund the additional days. The budget needs the legislature’s approval.
