This weekend on In Focus, we’re opening a conversation on winter tourism across upstate New York.
JoDee Kenney sits down with state Sen. Pamela Helming, who represents the 54th District, covering much of the Finger Lakes region. Helming said she became interested in public service and ran for office to help protect the region’s natural environment while also promoting responsible development. While the Finger Lakes is known for its vineyards and wine trails, Helming said there’s plenty to do each winter. She pointed out the skiing at Bristol, Swain, Hunt Hollow or Brantling Mountain, as well as snowmobiling, hiking and snowshoeing that bring visitors to the region.
For people looking for something a bit less fast-paced, the senator said wineries, craft brewers, distilleries and the many castles remain open during the winter, with the season adding to a growing tourism industry. Helming pointed to the $88 billion in tourism spending in 2023, that was up 12% over the previous year, that she said leads to sustained job growth year-round.
