We are talking about the importance of community centers across Upstate New York, this weekend on In Focus.

JoDee Kenney was joined by Fanny Villarreal, executive director of the YWCA for Syracuse and Onondaga County. The YWCA’s mission, Villarreal said, is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace justice and freedom for all. Two major programs Villarreal highlighted were the women’s residence and youth leadership and development. The residence provides more than just a safe space for survivors of domestic violence.

Villarreal said the YWCA connects women with educational and employment opportunities to build self-esteem. Girls Inc. works to teach young women to be smart, strong, and bold and, Villarreal said, the YWCA soccer program helps reinforce this foundation.
