This weekend on In Focus, we’re continuing our conversation this Hispanic Heritage Month, as JoDee Kenney welcomes Buffalo Common Council Member David Rivera. Rivera’s parents emigrated from Puerto Rico, settling in Western New York, working on farms and in factories and raising a family. Before serving in City Hall, Rivera rose through the ranks of the Buffalo Police Department. He talked about a number of challenges New Americans must overcome, from language barriers to accessing educational and job opportunities.

Rivera represents the Niagara District. He said it is among the most diverse in the city and, as he works for the people of Buffalo, he is focused on ensuring the city’s finances remain stable without putting an undue tax burden on residents.
