We’re talking about flood mitigation and the impact of extreme weather events across Upstate New York, this weekend on In Focus. JoDee Kenney welcomed NYS Mesonet Program Manager, and University at Albany Professor, June Wang to the conversation. The NYS Mesonet, operated by the University at Albany, provides critical, up-to-the-minute weather data to help emergency managers respond to areas impacted by storms. Wang said this high-quality data also helps forecasters and climate researchers predict extreme weather events and track long-term trends. In addition to atmospheric conditions, each of the 126 NYS Mesonet sites also tracks rainfall, snowfall, and soil temperature and moisture levels, that Wang said is used in developing flood mitigation plans.
