This weekend on In Focus, we open a conversation on growing available affordable housing options across Upstate New York. JoDee Kenney sits down with Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar to talk about the current housing situation and efforts to add affordable units. The City of Albany, he said, has some 7,000 units of affordable housing but, with the latest U.S. Census showing an overall increase in population, more will be needed. Shahinfar said Albany has been very successful in expanding subsidized and affordable housing for lower-income people, through partnerships with developers and property owners. Federal incentives right now, he said, need to encompass mixed-income development, as well as low-income units.
