The Utica Zoo is mourning the deaths of its two female ostriches.

Bina and Bushara were found dead in their exhibit Thursday morning.

Zookeepers say they have very little evidence as to what happened, but they believe a zebra that lived in the same exhibit may have attacked the birds.

The ostriches have lived in the same exhibit as the zebras for seven years now, and no serious aggression was ever observed between the animals.

"Animals of different species living together is a very common and a very natural thing, especially in the zoo world. Even in their natural range zebras and ostriches would live together regularly. Neither animal is known to hunt or go after the other one but any wild animal will defend itself if it feels that it needs to and things can happen," said Utica Zoo visitor experience and marketing manager Mark Simon.

As of right now, the zebra and ostrich area is closed to visitors.

The remaining animals in that exhibit have been separated.
