It’s a chance to honor those who served. Sunday, deceased veterans and their families were recognized during the Flags of Our Heroes ceremony at the War Memorial in the Oncenter.

It follows Mission 14 by Honor Flight Syracuse.

"Today is the final part of Mission 14; which is taking deceased veterans photos to Washington, where they're photographed at the memorial of the conflict they served in,” said Gene Gissin.

Dozens of veterans were posthumously recognized during the ceremony. It’s an opportunity to memorialize the veterans who weren’t able to make the trip to Washington, D.C.

“The ceremony was very emotional, it was very good. My father just passed away in August and he was looking forward to going to Washington, but unfortunately, he never did make it. So this was the best way I could honor him,” said Joyce Phillips.

During the ceremony, family members are given a photograph from the mission, as well as a certificate to honor their service.

If there’s a veteran you believe should be recognized, you can fill out an application on Honor Flight Syracuse’s website.
