What do you do with pumpkins when Halloween is over? When pumpkin season wraps up at Tim's Pumpkin Patch, the owners take all the leftovers to their dairy farm down the street.

"About 15 years ago we started feeding the pumpkins to the cows," said Tim's Pumpkin Patch owner, Tim Leubner. "We were like 'Wow!' We never realized the cows liked pumpkin, this is perfect!"

Maple Lane Farms has around 1,200 cows and they gobble up the pumpkins as quickly as they can.

"In fact, the cows tend to eat more when pumpkin is part of their feed. The pumpkins serve as a good source of protein and energy for the cows, which end up increasing their milk production," Tim said.

Workers say it's a great way to make sure no food goes to waste.

"In pumpkins, there's a lot of protein and carbohydrates, so when the cows are eating the pumpkins, it will actually increase the milk production,” said Tim’s Pumpkin Patch Manager Claudia Leubner. “So happy cows, and then we’re happy from it because we get more milk out of it in the long run."

Tim's Pumpkin Patch has also donated leftover pumpkins to food pantries, churches, and schools.
