When athletes on the Poland boys and girls soccer teams hit the pitch this weekend, they’ll play for more than the numbers on the scoreboard.

For the past several years, the teams have played for a cause during the Columbus Day Soccer Tournament.

This year, they pledged their support for local charity the Amazing Gracie’s Gift Foundation, which is in memory of Gracie Lawton, who passed away from cancer at two years old.

The organization helps families in the region who are struggling with pediatric cancer, or other life threatening illnesses.

Through gifts and other support, the non-profit has helped over six hundred families to date.

Members of the coaching staff say playing for a cause like this is a humbling experience for their athletes.

"It's an exciting weekend for them anyway, but I think adding a charitable cause helps them realize there's a little bit more in this world besides a soccer game," said Tom Basel.

In support, both teams wore Amazing Gracie’s t-shirts as uniforms.

Shirts and other apparel were also sold at a booth to the public for the chance of raising more money for the organization.
