More than 400 volunteers helped to put a Christmas spread on the table at the Rescue Mission Alliance in Syracuse, serving more than 1,800 plates of festive food.
As people filed in and out of the doorway of the Rescue Mission on Clifford Street, Spectrum News met Ryan Hausler. He was born in Central New York and has moved and relocated his life several times. He is now homeless and is spending this Christmas alone.
"I'm currently looking for a place to stay and income,” said Hausler, as he sat quietly with four other people Tuesday morning.
Hausler just moved back to the Syracuse area roughly a week ago and says the struggle to find food is real, especially when temperatures are frigid. He explained how this Christmas, he has a mission to get back up on his feet and is determined to maintain a job in 2019.
Volunteers like Karen Carnival made sure the gift of smiles were brought to each and every face who came through.
"We don't think about the next meal and they are, that is how they spend their day,” said Carnival, a volunteer at his mission. “It just amazes me that they live life like that."
