MARCELLUS, N.Y. — The fall season is a nice time to enjoy the great outdoors.

And some people like being outside a little more than others.

"I grew up on an apple farm, so I've always loved nature," said Baltimore Woods Environmental Educator Lexie Grove.

For Grove, 24, the outdoors is her calling.

Lexie is a Mexico, New York native and SUNY ESF grad who is an environmental educator at Baltimore Woods.

"I've been working here almost two years," she said.

You can usually find her in schools teaching kids about wildlife, science, and the Save the Rain initiative. She's also involved with outdoor programming at the nature center.

But during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of Lexie's job has become virtual as she films herself creating lessons for the internet.

"I put it all together, I add transitions, and voiceovers, photos, other videos, things like that, she said.

It's certainly an important job while restrictions remain tight for visitors in both schools and Baltimore Woods.

Lexie's also taking on a new project: Designing signage for a new handicap accessible path expected to be complete at the nature center next year.

"Lexie's here capturing things that people may not know to look for or see and helping people find where the trails are and really taking all of that knowledge she brings to our team, and delivering it to people who may not have been here in a long time," said Baltimore Woods Executive Director Whitney Lash-Marshall.

Lexie is proof — her passion for nature — is giving us all a better learning experience of the great outdoors.

Most of the programming at Baltimore Woods Nature Center remains virtual. While the Interpretive Center remains closed there are several ongoing outdoor programs.
