Efforts are underway to renovate and reopen Utica’s Uptown Theatre.

Much of the work and events at the historic site were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seeking help, Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts launched the Save a Seat Campaign recently.

Supporters can sponsor a theatre seat for $500. It’ll go toward a $500,000 goal to restore the theatre, which includes having a new roof installed.

As of Friday morning, 40 seats had been sponsored, and there are hopes that number will grow.

"That we’ve had such a good start makes us feel like we’re on the right track, and we know we still have a long way to go, but not everyone jumps in right away. We’re still getting the word out there," said Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts co-founder Briana Mahoney.

The Uptown has resumed comedy shows every Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
