Syracuse Teachers Association President Bill Scott passed away suddenly this weekend.

Scott, 53, became STA president in 2019, guiding the Syracuse City School District through the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that he served as the fourth vice president of the association beginning in 2014.

In a letter to members, the STA Executive Board described Scott as an advocate who brought a unique humanist approach to his work.

President of New York State United Teachers, Andy Pallotta, commented on the loss, staying: 

"The entire NYSUT family mourns the passing of STA President Bill Scott. A passionate advocate for Syracuse students and education professionals, Bill always brought a positive approach to his leadership and ensured that all voices were heard. He carried himself with great integrity and always took pride in his work. As a union family, we are here for Bill’s family in this heartbreaking time and extend our full support to his loved ones.”

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh reacting to Scott's passing as well...saying in a tweet:

"I am shocked and saddened by the news of Bill Scott’s sudden passing. Bill was a fierce advocate for his fellow teachers and our children. He will be missed dearly."
