UTICA, N.Y. -- The Rome man found guilty of killing a 25-year-old last summer will be spending at least 40 years behind bars.
Robert Coffin shot and killed Thomas Shepherd Jr. outside a Rome bar in August. He was later arrested in Las Vegas.
Coffin was sentenced on Monday to 25 years to life for murder and 15 years to life for criminal possession of a weapon. Those sentences will be served consecutively.
The victim's mother spoke at the sentencing.
"He should never walk as a free man, hoodlum, for my son does not have his life ... for my life is forever changed without Thomas," said Linda Shepherd, the victim's mother.
Coffin also spoke and maintained that he did not intend to kill Shepherd.
