Being able to go to a sports game or concert in New York is around the corner.

Starting February 23, large arenas and stadiums with at least a 10,000-person capacity can let fans inside. The new guidelines only allow 10 percent of the venue’s maximum capacity.

What You Need To Know

  • Venues with at least 10,000 person capacity can welcome fans at 10 percent of the capacity
  • They can begin that starting February 23
  • Local venues include the Carrier Dome and NBT Bank Stadium

At a capacity of almost 50,000 people, the Carrier Dome can start by seating close to 5,000 people. Syracuse University officials said the first fans inside will be a small group of students, no number specified.

“I’m like 'oh my god, this is happening!' And unfortunately, you read down a little bit and it doesn’t apply to us,” said Syracuse Crunch Chief Operating Officer Jim Sarosy.

Home to the Syracuse Crunch, the Oncenter War Memorial has a capacity of only around 6,000. Crunch fans will have to wait to feel the chill of the arena seats. Chief Operating Officer Jim Sarosy said there was little to be sad about when hearing the news.

“To be honest, it was a little bit exciting because it was the possibility of this getting real,” said Sarosy.

NBT Bank Stadium would be able to have a little more than 1,000 fans inside.

“New York has been working for Citifield and as they prepare for spring training they’ve been preparing for this so we have the added benefit of being part of the Mets organization so we could use those resources,” said Syracuse Mets General Manager Jason Smorol.

Smorol said though the season is months away, getting fans back in person is important for everyone.

“If it’s about getting to a crunch game, a Syracuse game, a theater event, a Syracuse Mets game that’s going to help our community get past all this and start to heal and come together to start getting used to our new normal,” said Smorol.

Fans will be responsible for providing a negative COVID-19 test 72 hours before the event. All eligible New York state venues will be required to submit their plans to the Department of Health.
