More Americans flew before Thanksgiving than at any point since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and this weekend, some Central New Yorkers returned home.

But it wasn’t just Thanksgiving travelers that passed through Syracuse Hancock Sunday.

What You Need To Know

  • US airports were the busiest they've been since the start of the pandemic leading up to Thanksgiving

  • Some travelers began returning home from the holiday, while others made their way through Syracuse for work

  • The nation's top health experts are urging those who traveled to get tested for COVID-19

"I'm here for work, I'm going to Fort Drum," said Eric Sutfin.

Over a million passengers made their way through US airports ahead of the holiday, the most since mid-March. Despite traveling during this busy period, some passengers said they felt safe, even on flights that were fully booked.

"Being the first time flying with masks and COVID situation it's very different. You can't move about and breath like you normally do, but you gotta do what you gotta do," said O.C. Jackson Jr.

"It's really no different, except for you're obviously wearing a mask the whole time, in the airport, and on the plane, and they try to separate people as much as possible, whether it be loading and unloading," Sutfin says. "You know hand sanitizer, they clean the planes. It's almost become normal, I guess you could say."

With the surge in travel for Thanksgiving, the nation’s top health experts are urging Americans who traveled to get tested.

"So if you're young and you gathered, you need to be tested about five to 10 days later, but you need to assume that you're infected and not go near your grandparents and aunts and others without a mask," said Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. "And if you're over 65 or you have co-morbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately."

A total of 61% of Americans changed their Thanksgiving plans according to an Axios/Ipsos poll released Tuesday.
