The Nave Law Winter Fair returned this year at the New York State Fairgrounds’ Expo Center.

A henna artist says her first year at the event was a success.

“Henna is from ancient time in Indian culture,” henna artist Priya Mode said. “We think Henna is for the good luck.”

Modi has been doing henna for five years.

“Henna is our culture,” she said. “I am Indian.”

She says henna is painted on for special events like for a bride on her wedding day. It’s considered a blessing.

“Henna absorbs your body hear,” she said. “Henna cools down your body.”

The dye comes from fresh henna leaves.

“They can dry and make like a powder,” she said. “The powder we put in the water, essential oils, sugar and lemon. It’s like paste, the henna then I make a cone. First I have to make the cone then I have to make henna. I just pour in it and it’s ready to go.”

Modi says henna can last up to two weeks.

“For the henna, you have to get everyday practice,” she said.

Events like this one is great exposure for her business, and she says she looks forward to returning next year.
