A state-of-the-art Amazon fulfillment center will move into a massive warehouse that’s under construction on Morgan Road in Clay.

Employees and Amazon robotics technology will "pick, pack and ship smaller customer items such as books, electronics, small household goods and toys,” according to a press release. The fulfillment center is expected to be the first of its kind in upstate New York.

“We’re very happy about this,” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said. “You can’t think restart without thinking about this once in a generation project.”

“From the first conversations we had about this project, we talked about how we could use it as a tool to help bring people out of poverty,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “We’re focused on transportation as an example, and working with CENTRO to see how we can get people there.”

The building is near the corner of Morgan Road and the Liverpool Bypass, where the old Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club used to be. Officials say it is a prime location because it’s near the thruway. It will benefit the entire region.

“This is going to give the city of Syracuse as well as all of us a great boost — not just in the short term but in the long term,” said Damian Ulatowski, the Clay Town Supervisor. “Because I’m more excited I think about the spinoff business that this project will generate and others will gravitate toward Central New York.”

The building will be open for the 2021 holiday season, said Amazon’s regional operations director Anand Mehta.

The announcement has been delayed for months because of the coronavirus outbreak.
