By now, you've noticed that Weather On the 1s has looked a little different.
Back in the spring, we were sent home from work due to Covid-19. Was it in March or April? It's hard to remember since all the months have blended together since then.
We were given the tools we'd need and instructed on how to create weather video clips from home.
As a mom of a 2-year-old and a 10-month-old at the time, living in a 900 square foot apartment, my only question was "how?" Did I mention I also have a black lab?
On any given day at any given time, my house is chaos. However, I have somehow made it work.
They say the early bird gets the worm and luckily, when I work the weekend morning shift I'm up before the birds. That means I'm also up before the kids and my husband so I'm able to get most of my work done when the rest of the house sleeps.
It works in my favor but it's also an obstacle. While I'm talking and trying to relay important weather information to our viewers, I occasionally wake up my kids.
Both of them have woken up crying in the wee hours of the morning because they can hear "Mama working."
Their bedroom doors are just seven steps away from my "recording studio," also known as my living room.
Speaking of, here it is in all of its weather producing glory.
Glamorous, right? I sit on a throw of pillows so that I am at an appropriate height in front of my television.
I have this set up down to a science and can put it up and break it down in a matter of minutes.
That probably explains why my ring light has taken a beating. See that orange duct tape at the bottom of it? That's what's holding this entire operation together.
To be honest, this picture probably leaves you with more questions than answers but my time is limited. My kids will be waking up soon, so let's move on.
The recording process itself should be easy in theory. It's not, and the video above pretty much sums it up.
With all of the changes Covid has thrown our way, I must say, I feel lucky that I have been able to continue my work while also spending more time with family.
I've been home for moments that I would have otherwise missed, such as my 1-year-old taking her first steps.
What happens from here remains to be seen but I can guarantee you that I'll continue to provide you with the latest weather updates and if you listen closely, you might just hear the cries, squeals, and screams of my toddlers in the background.
