Veterinarian Lexi Becker with The Animal Hospital says it's important to keep your Halloween candy away from your pets. She says chocolate and high-sugar candy like gummies can cause severe digestive issues and illness in pets.

It's also important to keep them away from sugar-free gum and candy or any product containing xylitol. Low blood sugar, vomiting seizures and possibly a coma can result if it's ingested.

There are also sneaky dangers like candy wrappers and lollipop that can be a choking hazard.

Becker adds it's important to contact your local veterinarian if you think your pet has ingested candy and they exhibit vomiting, diarrhea or severe lethargy.

She says if you're taking your dog trick-or-treating, make sure they are highly visible with a lit collar or harness, and that their microchip information is up to date.
