Karl Mofor glides on the football field for UAlbany. It's evident week in and week out.

His dedication to the program is unmatched. Going into what many thought was going to be his final season in the spring, expectations for Mofor and the team were high. But a season that started with hope was quickly derailed by injuries.

What You Need To Know

  • Karl Mofor of UAlbany is one of the premier running backs in all of FCS football

  • He had a chance to leave for the NFL after the spring season, but decided to stay

  • Mofor says he wants to leave the program better than he found it

"We only had a month or so of practice before our first game," Mofor said of the spring season. "So it was incorporating a lot of new pieces after not being able to practice in the fall, which was a little bit tricky for us. The excitement level was high. We won the first game and thought we were going to be rolling from there too, but things happen in football. So we just take the lessons learned in the spring when it comes time in the fall."

From there, he was left with a choice. Leave an extra year of eligibility on the table and join the ranks of the NFL, or stay and finish what he set out to do. And the choice for Mofor, was easy.

"UAlbany’s been home since 2017," Mofor said. "I had a goal here that I would come through, win a lot of football games. And I feel the goal is not yet accomplished. So I was like, ‘why leave my family when the NFL is not going anywhere?’ I just came back here to be with my brothers."

In the eyes of head coach Greg Gattuso, the decision to stay embodies what it means to put your soul into a program.

"Karl represents the purple family very, very well," Gattuso said. "He’s all about Albany football, Albany Great Danes [and the] University at Albany. He’s a great kid and I praise him so much. He’s a great leader. We talk about him as a person. He’s just a remarkable person."

Those are words Karl takes to heart with unfinished business on the table.

"It feels good to know what you do on a daily gets noticed, and it feels good to know I can help other people because I’m just a very generous person," Mofor said. "I like helping others."

His goals in his final season are as clear.

"Improve the team daily," Mofor said. "Whether it’s in the weight room, the field, the classroom and just win as much games as possible this season."

It’s all in a day’s work, leaving the program in a better spot for future Great Danes.

"From the guys who helped me be the player I am today, it would be a disservice to the younger guys if I don’t," Mofor said.
