The man convicted of causing a boat crash on Lake George that claimed the life of a young girl in 2016 is seeking a new trial.

It's been more than two years since a jury in Warren County found Alex West guilty of eight counts, including second degree manslaughter, tied to the death of eight-year-old Charlotte McCue. West had spent the day partying with friends at the celebration known as "Log Bay Day" before his boat crashed into the young girl's family's boat, causing her death and leaving her mother permanently injured.

Now, the 27-year-old West wants to have that conviction thrown out.

The Warren County Court Clerk's Office confirms that West has filed a "notice of motion to vacate judgment and set aside sentence.” In a document that the court clerk's office staff says is barely legible, West is arguing that he received ineffective counsel from his defense attorney, Cheryl Coleman.

The clerk's office has asked West, who is currently serving a 5- to 15-year sentence at a Western New York prison, to provide a more legible copy.

Coleman could not be reached for comment Thursday morning. Warren County District Attorney Jason Carusone, who was an assistant DA helping prosecute the case at the time of the 2017 trial, was also not available for comment.

West did not testify on his own behalf during the trial.  He has not listed a new attorney in his motion.
