The New York State PTA was among the groups signing onto a letter Tuesday opposing the legalization of marijuana in New York.

The letter was also signed by a variety of medical associations representing disciplines like otolaryngology and anesthesiologists, as well as the New York State Association of School Business Officials and the Rural Schools Association of New York State.

“We urge Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature to approach the issue of marijuana legalization with serious forethought, to heed the recommendations from leading medical organizations, and perform a thorough analysis of scrutinized data from other states that have legalized recreational marijuana use,” they wrote in the letter.

Cuomo, earlier on Tuesday, said a legalization push was likely out of the budget talks, but lawmakers disagree, saying they are working toward an agreement on the issue. Both the state Senate and Assembly included support for a marijuana legalization program in their one-house budget resolutions.
