HUDSON, N.Y. — There was no shortage of signs, t-shirts and voices at the "Bans Off Our Bodies" rally in Hudson Saturday.

An event that had 200 registrations before the start well exceeded those numbers.

“It’s important for people to take notice that women’s voices matter,” Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood CEO Chelly Hegan said. “And trans voices matter. We are being pushed off to be second class citizens once again in this country and that is not OK.”

After the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that signaled a potential reversal of Roe v. Wade, protests like these have become outlets for those who support access to safe abortion services.

It’s a right many believe is essential for generations to come.

“It’s really emotional to think that my daughter isn’t going to have the same rights that I had of the last decade. And it’s just unfathomable, frankly,” rally attendee, Galen Joseph-Hunter said.

Joseph-Hunter brought her daughter to Saturday's demonstration to show why it’s important to fight what you believe in.

“We are taking a step backward with this, and that’s insane,” Joseph-Hunter’s daughter, Echo Roe, said. “The younger generation should show up because it’s affecting us.”

Youth educators like Brittany Beyus say it’s powerful to see the next generation represented in these rallies.

“The younger generation is picking up the mantle and saying, ‘nope, we aren’t going to let this drop. We are going to keep fighting too,’” Beyus said.

Beyus says the passion behind this cause shouldn’t end after these rallies.

“I want them to continue to be fired up and not roll over. And not just let this happen to the communities that are at risk, that do need this support,” Beyus said. “Stay hopeful and stay fierce.”
