Volunteers with the Saratoga Springs Community Outreach Committee celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday Monday by giving.

“We’re helping out MLK Saratoga Springs Day of Service,” said Katie Carr. “We’re collecting food and clothing for the SNACpack Program and Shelters of Saratoga.”

The COVID-friendly drive-through proved to be successful, with a steady flow of cars dropping off donations.

“It’s a very generous town,” said Shaun Wiggins. “Given today’s environment, we appreciate people taking the time to bring goods to this contactless environment.”

In addition to collecting goods, the newly formed group of about a dozen people are hoping to raise awareness of local racial issues.

“What we really focus on is educating individuals about individual biases and general biases, and also try to combat racism, too, as well,” said Wiggins.

The committee is also encouraging people to back their effort by joining the team, like Lindley Hickox.

“I think there has been a lot of things happening, obviously, in the world, our country, and locally, too,” she said. “I was trying to find a place to put that energy to engage.”

Some of the items collected Monday included canned goods, cereal, and socks.
