There are now a total of 13 new cases in a recent spike of the coronavirus in Albany County.

The county has a total of 2,066 cases.

Five of the new cases came in over the weekend from a party on Hudson Avenue that more than 200 people attended. Eleven party-goers have tested positive so far, according to county officials.

County Executive Dan McCoy and Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen are urging anyone who attended the party to reach out to the county health department and get tested.

They both say that the number of cases would be higher if people ages 20-29 would get tested. It is believed many of them are asymptomatic and inadvertently spreading the virus.

"We're not trying to scare you. We're not trying to put out there that what this virus is," McCoy said. "I know people keep trying to compare it to flu season. People die from the flu. They're over it. Kids don't get signs or symptoms. Well, this Hudson party is a prime example.

"You have all these kids, over 200 of them, coming together, not socially distanced, and now they're infected and they're spreading it to other people. Thank goodness none of them have gotten sick and ended up in the hospital or ICU."

Officials are hopeful this July 4 spike will go down over the next couple of weeks.
