Soon-to-be high school graduates Madeline Rinehimer and Shannin Cato are spending their late spring days spreading joy to elderly members of their Delmar community.

"It made us very happy, because we're touching people we live with and see every day," said Rinehimer.

In lieu of their usual end-of-year school projects, the girls decided to do something meaningful for their vulnerable neighbors. They made cards with positive messages, and potted marigolds with hand-painted pots.

Maddie and Shannin teamed up with a local senior care advisor, Maura Barrett, who helped them identify seniors in the community that were in need of a little pick-me-up during this isolating time.

"There are so many people in our own neighborhoods that are living alone, the widows in particular, people experiencing grief. And even if they have family nearby, they're at home, eating their dinner alone," said Barrett.

With Maura's help, they went door to door dropping off gifts to 10 very gracious men and women.

"Some of them were speechless and just looked at us and were like 'oh my god, you made my day,' " said Cato.

There were big smiles, a lot of tears, and some recipients were in total disbelief.

"What has come up from several of them is 'I can't believe these girls are seniors, they're experiencing all kinds of loss with no graduation, proms...' and they're looking to give out to others. That resonated a lot with them," said Barrett.

The girls said the act of kindness helped take their minds off of graduation, and end the school year on a positive note.
