While the future is uncertain for athletes who play spring sports due to coronavirus, one thing is for sure: They need to stay in shape while they wait to find out whether they'll play the rest of their seasons.

At the College of Saint Rose, the school's strength and conditioning coach has been using technology to make sure their athletes are on track.

"Everyone's been kind of doing their own thing, but just giving them, 'Here's something extra to do, here's a new stretch to try, here's a little extra work I can be doing on my own,'" said Matt June, the strength and conditioning coach at the College of St. Rose.

June started his job at St. Rose just about two weeks before the school shut down, so he had to come up with a creative way to make sure athletes were keeping up training. He's been posting short workout and stretch videos and creating challenges on social media anyone can do, not just the school's athletes.

"Everyone's kind of connecting via these things like, 'Hey did you do that exercise? Did you do that challenge today? That was hard or whatever it may be,' and it's all-encompassing," June said.

He says keeping the athletes in touch with one another and he's been working with them using virtual meetings to make sure they're training the right way so they don't get hurt, making sure to incorporate nutrition and rest at home.

St. Rose baseball seniors Frankie Pizzo and Andrew Pedone live together. Their season was cut short but they're staying in shape hoping they'll get to play this summer.

"It's definitely been a challenge, especially with the amount of work we put in all offseason, things were kind of were changing for us for the baseball program," Pizzo said.

"You could feel the culture-changing and as upperclassmen, it felt so good that we could make an impact on the younger guys, so having it cut short is, unfortunately," Pedone said.

Pedone plays the infield while Pizzo is a pitcher, so their workouts are a little different.

"I'm trying to keep more of my endurance and stamina up," Pizzo said.

"And I'm more focused on gaining weight again but I am trying to maintain my flexibility at the same time," Pedone said.

But they say they enjoy doing the videos June creates together.

"So there are workouts that we'll do, maybe like the AMRAP one where you do as many reps as possible, pushups, crunches and in and out squats, we thought that was a really good one," Pedone said.

"Like Matt said, it's really just adding to the workouts we're doing ourselves," Pizzo said

Something to keep in mind: These are student-athletes so they're balancing staying in shape with their classwork, all online.

If they don't get to play this summer, both Pizzo and Pedone say they're planning to be back for the 5th year. Additionally, the NCAA announced an extra year of eligibility for spring sport athletes back in March.
