Governor Andrew Cuomo said an April date for a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Chris Collins earlier this week makes sense.

Cuomo said the November general election is too soon, and the next scheduled election after that is the Democratic presidential primary on April 28.

He said there's "great benefit" to schedule the special election on a day voters are already going to the polls.

The governor isn't expected to announce an official date until February.

In the meantime, area Republicans are in no hurry to pick a candidate to run in the anticipated special election.

State Party Chair Nick Langworthy held a conference call with the eight county chairs in the 27th district Tuesday.

A source on the call said all agreed to postpone any talk about endorsing a candidate until after the general election in November.

Even after that, Langworthy encourages the party chairs to take their time.

Three Republican candidates had declared their interest in running for the seat even before Collins resigned. At least two others are now considering a run at the now vacant seat.
