A crash on Washington Avenue Extension has left one person dead.

Police say the driver was traveling on Washington Avenue Extension, around 7:15 p.m. when his car struck a 50-year-old man crossing the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene according to police.

The speed limit on the road is 45 miles per hour and it's not mean to be used by pedestrians. Authorities say the best way to avoid accidents like this is to skip the shortcuts.

"The biggest thing is to use a crosswalk, go to an intersection where pedestrians should be crossing,” said Albany Police spokesperson Steve Smith. “What we know so far during the course of this investigation is that this pedestrian was crossing an area where he probably shouldn't have been crossing. There is no crosswalk; it's not the most lit area of this highway."

The road has been closed off for several hours Tuesday night, while investigators reconstructed the scene.

The victim's identity has not yet been released.
