The Albany Police Chief is standing by his officers who were involved in a traffic stop that led to an arrest. Video of that encounter is going viral on social media.

Chief Eric Hawkins is defending his officers' actions in the arrest on Sunday night at the intersection of Grand Street and Madison Avenue. He says 26-year-old Brianna Biddings was forcibly removed from her car after she refused to comply with the officers' commands.

"From what I saw those officers performed in an admirable way," said Hawkins, on Tuesday.

According to Hawkins, police approached Biddings' car because it was double parked. He says while talking to her, officers had reason to believe drug activities may be involved.

Hawkins says Biddings was asked get out of her car but refused. That's when police attempted to arrest her.

"Even after they told that driver that she was under arrest, those officers spent several minutes, upwards of seven to eight minutes, trying to convince this person to exit the car," Hawkins said.

This is where Hawkins says the video started recording. According to police, that’s also when an officer used forearm strikes to Biddings's forearms, trying to get her to release the steering wheel.

Video has garnered thousands of views and some criticism. But Hawkins says his officers did the right thing.

"No strikes what so ever to this person's face and no punches what so ever," Hawkins said. "These were forearm to forearm strikes in order to get the person to release."

Biddings' attorney Mark Mishler declined an interview on Tuesday. However, he did provide a brief statement.

"Ms. Biddings, her family, and I - along with many members of the public - are disturbed, angry, and concerned by the brutal actions of the Albany police on September 1st some of which are depicted on the cell-phone video of the incident that has been made public," Mishler said. "Ms. Biddings intends to seek justice and is grateful for the public support that has been expressed at this time."

Police did not file drug charges. However, Biddings is facing obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest.
