Ballston Spa's Ethan Shuhart is a star athlete who maintains a 4.0 GPA, donates his free time to volunteer work, and holds dreams of working in the military. On Wednesday, he was honored.

"He just sets a great example to all the students and athletes at this school," said Ballston Spa Boys Varsity Coach Garry Preece.

The junior, and young goalie, was presented the MaxPreps Semper Fidelis Male Athlete of the Month Award. When he is not on the field, or excelling in the classroom, he works for the Buddy Blankets and Bears Charity to help sick children.

"You know some people have a chronic illness they have to deal with, some people come from a broken home. Instead of abusing the life I have — a blessed life where I can relax on the couch — I instead want to get off the couch and help other people," Shuhart said.

MaxPreps presents this monthly honor in partnership with the U.S. Marine Corps. Shuhart says he has already began his application to two military colleges.

"I want to serve my country, I want to do something to help others. Whether that means getting shot at so people can protest, so people can talk about what they want to talk about, I think that's the greatest freedom in the world and I would so anything to try to protect that," Shuhart said.

As part of his award, Shuhart will travel to Washington D.C. for a four-day program to experience life as a marine.
