Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer, Berkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington and Pittsfield Schools Superintendent Jake McCandless issued a statement after an emergency meeting about disturbances at local parks and school grounds.

"The safety and well-being of our children is priority No. 1. We will not tolerate conduct and behavior that puts the lives of our children and other members of our community in harm’s way. This issue is now at the highest ranks of city, school, and law enforcement officials. We are actively engaging with all parties to identify and implement immediate steps to curtail these disturbing actions that are taking place in our schools and in our public spaces,” said Mayor Tyer in the statement.

This comes after a fight this past week among middle school students, and mounting community concerns of disorderly behavior. The Pittsfield police department says there has been one arrest in connection with the incident. Now school officials and police are cracking down.

They will be meeting with students involved in the incidents and police will seize illegal pellets, airsoft, and BB guns.

There will also be an additional police presence around city parks and at Reid Middle School.
