The first phase of a 248-unit net zero apartment complex in Rotterdam is now complete and will welcome new tenants the first of May.

"People just like the fact that where they're living is not contributing to harming the environment, and in addition, they're just nice apartments," said Solara Apartment Developer David Bruns.

The Solara Apartments produce all of the energy needed on site, and have virtually no carbon footprint.

The energy-efficient building on North Thompson Street is one of only a few of its kind. The Solara has modernized one- and two-bedroom apartments with rent ranging from $1,300 to $1,700 with all utilities included.

New York State provided $15 million in grants across the state to make projects like this one a reality.

"We are moving aggressively toward clean energy solutions, toward reducing our carbon footprint, and building a more sustainable tomorrow," said New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Alicia Barton.

So far, 96 units are move-in ready. A new building is expected to open every month.
