A 19-vehicle pile-up, including tractor-trailers, shut down the New York State Thruway near Batavia Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday at marker 382 eastbound on I-90.

All east and westbound lanes were shut down for several hours, but have since reopened.

State police say an 18-wheeler, which shouldn't have been on the highway because of the commercial vehicle ban, triggered the whole thing. Police say that rig jack-knifed, striking a state police cruiser.

Trooper Dominique Wilson was sitting in her car at the time. She suffered non-life threatening injuries, but remains at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Two other drivers, including a Palmyra man, were also injured.

The drivers of those trucks have been ticketed for for several violations, which include disobeying a traffic control device.

New York State ordered tractor-trailers and buses off the Thruway Tuesday and the ban resumed until Thursday evening, when it was lifted. Now Gov. Cuomo is threatening a fine and possible criminal charges against the tractor-trailer drivers involved.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul stressed that all trucks needed to exit the highways to avoid causing any further crashes.

"The problem is a lot of people are ignoring this [ban] and they do that to the great detriment of themselves, but also the peril of other motorists and indeed we've had accidents resulting because these individuals continue to violate the existing ban for trucks and buses," Hochul said.
