A teenager is in stable condition and another behind bars following a stabbing in Rensselaer.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday near First Street and Harrison Avenue.

Police say a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

The victim, who has not been identified, remains in stable condition thanks in part to quick response from first responders.

Meanwhile, another 16-year-old is facing attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges in connection.

"Its disturbing to have two 16-year-olds fighting, let alone have it get to this level where someone is in this condition and someone is under arrest for this," said detective Scott Earing. "It's tragic you don't want to see these things happen. The response was incredible by everyone involved. The doctors indicted the quick response potentially saved this kids life."

The suspect's name is being withheld because of his age.
