The sound of bagpipes accompanied Officer Gerald Shaw and his K-9 Vader out the doors of the Colonie Police Department. The ceremony marked the end of their near three decades long service.

"The 28 years has gone by extremely fast. I can still remember my first day in the academy," Shaw said.

Shaw spent 22 of those years with Colonie Police, and then became a K-9 handler in 2003. Chief Jonathon Teale says Shaw was instrumental in the K-9 program within the department.

"Officer Shaw was a huge part in keeping that program going. It's really a family within the law enforcement community," Teale said.

Vader joined Shaw's side five and a half years ago. Together, the team tackled nearly 200 drug searches, tracked down nearly 90 missing persons cases, and were well known for improving community relations.

However, Shaw says the best part about working with a furry officer is the company.

"[Vader] doesn't complain about anything. He doesn't care what radio station I listen to," Shaw joked.

Teale says it is never easy to see their family members leave the force.

"I personally think everyone is never truly replaceable. Even though [newcomers] will be great, it's going to be different," Teale said.

After the day's celebration, Shaw still has to break the news to his four legged partner that they are not returning to work.

"He is not ready for retirement. I haven't exactly told him what's going on yet. Unfortunately, I hit the wall first and we're a package and he has to go with me," Shaw said.

Vader will be living with Shaw, as he has since Shaw became his handler. The two are looking forward to some well needed relaxation and some extra time with family.

Colonie police say there are two new K-9 units to take over the duties of the retired duo.
