Two retail marijuana shops are set to open in the Berkshires for Massachuetts's gradual rollout of legal weed.

Theory Wellness is one of two medical marijuana stores in the Berkshire County that will soon become a recreational cannabis shop.

"It was a big step for us," said Teva Smith, the dispensary manager for Theory Wellness in Great Barrington. "There is still a few more steps in the process."

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission approved final licenses on Thursday for four more retail stores — Temescal Wellness in Pittsfield is another.

Temescal opened in October, serving medical marijuana with hopes of becoming a recreational store.

"Our intention was always to include adult use into that location," said Linda Katz, Temescal Wellness vice president of Sales and Marketing.

Retail stores opened in November in Northampton and Leicester. A third shop will open in Salem this weekend. Both Temescal and Theory are anticipating large turnouts when their stores add recreational sales.

"We're obviously creating a parking plan to manage the increase[d] traffic, to make sure there's limited impact," Katz said.

Theory Wellness is planning to add about 20 people to their staff. Despite becoming a retail shop, Smith says the focus remains on the patients and making sure their treatments are not affected.

"Our patients have made us and they'll continue to be our top priority," Smith said.

The state will need to conduct final inspections before the retail shops can open. Both stores are hoping to open in a few weeks.
