Simple marijuana possession will not be prosecuted in Albany County beginning December 1.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares made the announcement Thursday, saying it's a waste of resources to prosecute such cases.

Any possession under 2 ounces will not be prosecuted; Soares added, though, that it does not mean people can smoke marijuana in public or around children.

Soares said those who were previously charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession charges can apply for the 'Clean Slate' program. Those who meet qualifications may be able to get their records sealed or expunged.
