VESTAL, N.Y. -- A suspect in the Sunday night fatal stabbing of a Binghamton University freshman is now in custody, according to police.

The victim has been identified as freshman engineering student Joao Souza.

Police responded Sunday night to Windham Hall, where they found 19-year-old Souza suffering from stab wounds. He would later die in a nearby medical facility.

Police did not elaborate early Monday evening where the suspect was found, but said he was a Binghamton University student. Later Monday, the student -- identified as Michael M. Roque -- was charged with second degree murder.

Police said their presence would continue despite apprehending a suspect.

"This investigation is going to continue for quite some time. An investigation like this always does. So I think that for the foreseeable future, there will be an increased police presence across the campus," said Binghamton University Police Chief Tim Faughnan.

In the meantime, university officials say student safety isn't at risk -- but they're reminding students to lock their doors and keep their BU IDs on them at all times. If you have any information, you're asked to call campus police at 607-777-2393.
